Moulin de Campech is ideally situated to explore the region of Aquitaine, and in particular the Department of Lot et Garonne. The local area is dominated by Bastide towns, these are fortified villages and towns built by both the English and the French, dating as far back as the 12th century. There are many towns and villages waiting to be explored, the smaller offering peace and tranquillity, while the larger towns offer regular markets and good shopping. The local market days normally prove to be the busiest time of the week for many of the local towns and they are characteristically French, catering for the local population and almost always provide a wide range of local produce.
Casteljaloux is our nearest town, 10km from the campsite. As well as its twice weekly market, there is also the Thermal Spa and Lakeside beach. You will also find good size supermarkets, bars, restaurants, chemist, post office, banks etc. Visit Casteljaloux tourist office website for more information.
As you would expect in France there are many high quality local wines and caves where you can sample the products. The nearest caves are at Buzet-sur-Baise, Leyritz-Moncassin and Cocumont whilst there are many more within easy reach.
Moulin de Campech is also on the edge of the Armagnac region, beginning at Nerac and extending to the south. There are many distilleries of varying sizes producing a product that many people believe to be far superior to the more famous Cognac. A day trip through the extremely attractive Armagnac region, perhaps enjoying a meal and a tasting session can prove be a very pleasant day out.
The campsite is ideally situated for walking and cycling. Click here for more details. Walking in the region is a great way to see the vast array of wildlife common to this region. Deer, red squirrels, birds of prey, golden orioles, kingfishers, lizards and even wild boar are occasionally spotted.
Further afield a two hour drive will see you on the Atlantic coast and the endless miles of sandy beaches. To the south of Arcachon is the Dune de Pilat, the largest sand dune in Europe.
A two and a half hour drive can see you in the spectacular scenery of the Pyrenees.
Other day trips that are possible include Bordeaux, Toulouse, Biarritz, Lourdes, Spain, or Andorra.
